There can be no beginning
One question that arises in our philosophical discussions these days is the Mayan calendar and 2012. We perceive that time is speeding up, and some fear that the world may indeed be ending. Where exactly are we in the thread of time? Is this the end, or is it the beginning? There are many philosophies in this world, and has been for thousands of years. Today we find new teachings with nearly every turn we make. Many take their intuitive insights and build upon them, assigning names to the concepts, methods, and techniques they share. Do I state this in affirmation or argument? Neither. Where do any of us start our journey of spiritual recognition? We start with awakening, the glimmers of insight that spark focus, and thought. Is there any point at which spirituality begins? We cannot see its beginning or its end. We cannot point a finger at our spiritual existence, or capture spirit in a book, song, or teaching. What we see are expressions of our spiritual nature. We find the ever flowing, unrestrained feeling, insight, or vision that is so deeply and profoundly full of life that no matter how hard we try we cannot explain it. We try to repeat the expression, in our scientific manner, but we cannot as most of our efforts are in the “worldly way”. Still, we remember those sparks of divinity that creates the crackles in the tight-knit egg shell we live in, and we wonder. To paraphrase an already overworked expression: there are many roads to reach the top of the mountain. Each road has its own perspective, and while some of us prefer the east side there are others who feel more connected to the west. It is all still a journey on the same mountain. As to the spirit of the day, can we truly say that today is a more spiritual time, or any more vivid than any other? To do so is to say the “all that is”, the being that has no beginning or ending, must be modified to fit within the form we call “today”. The state of being simply “is”, with no beginning. How do we show honor to our own spirituality, our own existence: through example. Every moment of our lives we have an open doorway to express ours spiritual nature. The apple is an expression, the gift of life created by the tree. We nourish ourselves through the little things in life, one apple at a time. To worship the tree does not make the fruit any sweeter, but in the same respect we learn enough to respect the tree, and understand that each and every apple that we find, those moments of awakening, come from the same tree.
